Java Overtakes C

The >>TIOBE Programming Community Index for April 2006 results are in.

There are a number of interesting points to be taken from the results, including:

  • Java has overtaken C as the #1 language at 21.275%
  • Java is the language to increase its rating the most (+4.29%)
  • Perl is the language to decrease its rating the most (-4.35%)
  • Java's increase (+4.29%) is greater than C#'s total (3.948%)
  • For the first time Object-Oriented languages are now as popular as procedural-languages (49%/49%)
  • Java is 72 times more popular than Smalltalk
  • Smalltalk placed surprising low in 30th place
  • Java is 30 times more popular than Lisp/Scheme
  • Lisp/Scheme placed surprising high in 14th place
